Message from the Director

The last one month was frantic - extra classes, labs, pre-final exams, sessionals, etc. The oppressive heat added to the woes of the students. Relax, it is time for a good summer break! The 5th semester students have done a wonderful job in arranging for their summer training programs with the help of our faculty member Mr. Basant Dash, Training Officer and staff of the Training & Placement department. Students are undergoing training in 94 organizations all over the country. I wish them all the best and remind them once again that this is an opportunity to impress the host organizations with your quality work and also to imbibe the industry culture.

Wishing everyone a cool Summer Vacation!!                                                                       May 15, 2002 (Sangram Mudali)

Message from the Editor

In my first class, I convey to my students that they ought to be interactive in all my classes till the end of the syllabus and not to be mum. I feel that without interaction a teacher can never be successful in communicating his ideas. Interaction will let one know as to how much the listener has grasped the idea. Interaction between the student and teacher plays an important role for the success of teaching. I always keep an environment in the classroom so that students feel free to ask me. So, here also, my dear readers, let us keep this Newsletter interactive. I want more interaction from our readers.

I welcome the IDEA of our Placement Director, Ms Geetika Mudali about NACCS (NIST Alumni Career Counselling Services). NACCS is a platform which will bring our Alumni closer to us.

It's that time of the year again, Rising temperature!! So, Summer Vacation!! Let us enjoy its every moment. Wishing to see you all after vacation with the best of your health and spirit.

Respected sir

I have gone through the e-news 3rd edition. I would like to congratulate all the GATE qualifiers especially Mr. Roy. He gave a new dimension to our mission by securing 99%. I hope many more students will get inspired by that and hope next year we may find new records being set. Also I would like to congratulate all the prize winners for their achievments outside Orissa. When some of the students who are doing their Masters over here from various parts of India (mostly from Bombay), they are of high opinion about our students and they are telling that when they will go to India they will like to visit our institute. In reality if I will summarise they are quite surprised when I bought the VHDL softwares and they were more surprised when they learned that our students are getting the education in these advanced courses. As per their opinion if your students will come for masters over here then definitely for them life will become more easy. I met with one boy in the Electronics Engg and as per him VLSI and VHDL is most essentail things over here and they have faced lots of difficulty initially.

Further, I would like to thank Partha and his team for the nice compilation. In fact the comments that has been sent by several recognised persons is of great value and adds much more glory to the NIST colour. With regards, Arun

GRE for Engineers- Seminar Presented by TIME,Vizag

Geetika Mudali

A seminar was presented at NIST by TIME, Vizag on April 16, 2002. It covered the details of GRE Entrance Examination. TIME , Vizag has sent 1000 students abroad in the last 2 years. Most of these students are from the Private Engineering Colleges of Vizag like GITAM, GVPCE and some others from Andhra University. Most of these students in these colleges are taking the GRE exam in the 1st Year or latest by 2nd year as they reserve the 3rd Year for CAT and other MBA exams. TIME of Vizag covers two aspects of the exam – coaching for the GRE & TOEFL exam and consultancy for going abroad. In consultancy services they give support for getting admission to a University & getting financial aid for going to US. Consultancy includes the following

  1. Downloading Forms
  2. Selection of Universities
  3. Application Forms with Fee etc.
  4. Statement of purpose (SOP)
  5. Recommendation Letters
  6. Financial Documents
  7. Transcripts 8. GRE Score
  1. Scope & availability of assistantships
  2. Applying for visa

As per them a minimum score of 1500 in GRE ensures admission into one of the good colleges of US. There are about 200 colleges in the US that one can apply in the US. Top 20 colleges are the Ivy League colleges and only the best can get into it. Admission can be taken for Fall session (Beginning in July) or Spring Session (Beginning in January). Admission to any college depends on

1. Academic Performance or GPA ( Grade Point average) 2. GRE Score

3. Recommendation Letters 4. SOP

They also have support for providing the financial documents as required by the Universities.

A list of the students who have got into the various Universities is available in the Placement office/ Sagar Xerox. The email- ID's of the Student Network (Students who are in US and are available on e-mail) is also available. Those interested can send email for their queries. Interested students can also visit their Office in Vizag. They will give Free coaching for 3 days.

Q. Where do you originally belong to?

Pradeep: First of all thank you Sir for giving me the privilege of being interviewed for NIST_eNEWS . I was born in Jamshedpur and have done my schooling from class 1 to class XII in Ispat English Medium School, Rourkela.

Q. Why did you choose NIST for engineering education?

Pradeep: I chose NIST , as it was renowned and I was bent upon studying Computer Science and Engineering.

Q. How did you manage GATE Exam, University Exam, Mid -Semester, Pre-Final, Assignment, Project , etc. simultaneously?

Pradeep: Actually , I had to make a choice. That called for sacrifices and so now my average is 65% in the semester examinations. This is my personal point of view. There are better students in NIST than me.

Q. Do you think preparation for GATE, GRE and TOEFL can hamper regular curriculum?

Pradeep: This is a difficult question for me to answer. I strongly believe in a single-minded approach for such examinations. Regular curriculum may take the back seat for a few months.

Q. How can the NIST faculty help the students for a good percentile in GATE?

Pradeep: NIST faculty are already helping. We have had separate clubs in the past for various competitions. It was Mr. B.K Dash who gave me the address of the Institute from which I brought the preparatory material. I take this opportunity to thank him for the interest that he has always shown for the welfare of students. The management can be a bit lenient with the attendance and marks from December to February.

Q. What is your advice/guidance for the next NIST students who will be appearing for GATE?

Pradeep: Most important is to get the fundamentals. This can be done while the course is being taught in the class. For example, second semester students can pay more attention to C Programming, third semester students can pay more attention to Data Structures and so on. Having knowledge of the level and pattern of questions coming in GATE is highly recommended. Then a final slog has to be made before the actual examination. That can be started from November.

Q. Where will be your first choice for higher education?

Pradeep: IISC Bangalore.

Q. Do you want to share anything about yourself?

Pradeep: My father has been my greatest source of inspiration. He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur. My mother has been vital in making home for studying. There has been a lot to learn here, at NIST. I feel privileged to have come into contact with Dr. Ravi Reddy. Finally I would like to thank our endeared Director, Mr. Sangram Mudali for taking note of my performance and giving a word of appreciation in the previous issue for NISTe_News. Thank you very much Sir!.

Jokes

An interesting short story

I married a widow who had a grown-up daughter. My father, who visited us quite often, fell in love with my step-daughter and married her. Hence, my father became my son-in-law, and my step-daughter became my mother. Some months later, my wife gave birth to a son, who became the brother-in-law of my father as well as my uncle. The wife of my father, that is my step-daughter, also had a son. Thereby, I got a brother and at the same time a grandson. My wife is my grandmother, since she is my mother's mother. Hence, I am my wife's husband and at the same time her step-grandson; in otherwords, I am my own grandfather.

(This story was collected by Mr Dev Prasad Padhy, our System Administrator from a Data Structure book where it is quoted by N. Wirth from a Zurich newspaper of July 1922).

respected madam.
how are you? convey my regards to all the faculty members. we are fine here. we are undergoing training now. our training will be over on April 19th. then we will be put into different projects in different locations.
We are under going all type of training. Basically we have to concentrate both on tech & life skills(personality development).life skill is nothing but like a mini MBA course. They teach us about communication skills, presentation skills, personal grooming, dress code, different etiquette etc. the tech portion is very easy for us. because we had gone thruogh all those things in B.E.here we have s/w engg , computer nenwork,c,c++,dbms, data structure, algorithm.now i am realising that how important role the course in B.E.plays in real life.we are well ahead of all non C.S. background trainee from other colleges.thanks a lot for providing a good course. here we are given a small project to submit at the end of training.at the end we have to give exit test.although exit test plays a significant role in the starting of our carrier, but it is not so important. Anyway we are trying to have a good score. here we are put into a good hostel.life is very enjoyable here. Only thing we are missing is our friends and parents.we used to talk about our old days in NIST where we were all students and now we are all professionals.
we all are missing you and all the faculty members a lot.
yours sicerely

Gardens of NIST

Sudhir K Sahu, Gardener

We have been working hard Since 1997 to make 30 acre NIST campus "eco-friendly". The Gardens of NIST are being nurtured by more than 16 gardeners. Each garden is unique in nature and I invite all NISTians to enjoy their company.

Rose Garden: There are 216 varieties of exotic quality rose plants, which have been purchased from Bangalore. This garden always gets the "oohs" and "aahs" from the visitors.

Flower Garden: Located next to the rose garden, this garden grows Seasonal flowers in neat beds. It has a eye-catching NIST logo on grass background.

Rock Garden: This garden modelled after a similar garden at Ramoji Studio, Hyderabad, is located behind the Facility Center. The natural rocks and vegetation are being maintained in their pristine beauty.

Fruit Garden: Located behind the Octagon, there are 28 varieties of fruit trees like Mango, Jackfruit, Jamrol, Pomegranate, Peach, Guava. The fruits are borne on small size hybrid trees.

Forest Park: To keep the entire campus green, the J. K. Paper Mills has planted 11000 eucalyptus trees in front of the Lecture Hall complex.

Caesarian Garden: Located behind the Octagon, this garden reflects the natural vegetation of our close to sea campus.

Ornamental Garden: There are 600 flowering plants and shrubs in front of Lecture Hall right upto the Octagon.

Ringside Trees: More than 650 trees of 22 varieties including badam, kadamba, casia pistula, largestonia, have been planted on the edge of the campus. They are planted on both sides of our 2Km jogging track.

Nursery: To cater all our present and future requirements, we have a "green-house" and nursery where more than 1000 plants have been raised in flower pots and beds.
