| Student Achievements
The batch of 1996 graduated from NIST with flying colors. More than 75% received First Class degree in their B.E. program. Four students, Reshma Rout, Abhishek Chatterjee, Nirajana Nayak and Bidhan Das got Honors. The batch of 1997 maintained the winning ways of NIST. Five students got Honors. They are: Basudev Agarwal, Siddhartha K Panda, Manoj K Agarwal, Soumendra Kanungo and Shrabani Pattnaik. Ms. Tapaswini Mishra of 2001 batch won the first prize in the Inter College Debate Competition (Oriya) organized by Berhampur University on February 15, 2002. Mr. Sunkuru Sunil K Rao and Ms. Gayatri Gouda (both of 2001 batch) won a prize in the international competition organized by Computer Science department of IIT, Kharagpur. The contest was a algorithm based online programming contest called BITWISE 2001. Ms. Pallavi Mohanty and Ms. J Sandhya (both of 1999 batch) got the runners-up prize in the Cyber Quiz competition organized by Information Technology Association of Orissa (ITAO) in Bhubaneswar, 3rd -4th Feb, 2002. The award was worth Rs. 1.5 Lacs. Mr. Satya Swarup Sahu and Mr. Prashamik Chatterjee (both 1998 batch) won prizes in the IT Olympaid organized by Orissa Information Technology Society on September 2, 2001. NISTians participated in cultural festivals of IIT, Kanpur (Antaragini, Sept 2000) and IIT, Kharagpur (SPRINGFEST, Jan 2000) where they won many prizes. Siddharth Panda and Santosh Panigrahi won prizes at the MNREC Tech Fest "Aviskar i2K" held in September, 2000. In HiPC Conference (Dec 17-19, 2000, Bangalore) 6 students have been selected for fellowship award. They are Kamaljit Mohanty, Debjani Majhi, Bhakti Deepak Mohanty, Smita P Mallick, Ashrujit Mohanty and Nishikanta Pati. Two of our students( Debabrata Parida and Avijit Bose) participated in the ISTE Conference held in Bhubaneswar. The topic was "Industry Institute Interaction- expectations & experiences". The ISTE student chapter of NIST organized the Millenium 2000 technical conference in January 2000. ISTE has honored the NIST ISTE student chapter with the BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD (ORISSA SECTION). Aswini Kumar Tadinada got 2nd Prize based on his paper on Gunn Diode Simulation in the National Level Student Paper Contest organized by IETE, Vijaywada chapter and held on Jan 28, 2001. Kamaljit Mohanty and Prakash Chhapolia won 2nd Prize in Technical Puzzle Contest of Sacoesium-2001 held at Tiruchendur in Tamilnadu on Jan 24-25, 2001. Govind Devi Prasad Sharma and Sudhakar Tiwari won 1st Prize in Technical Quiz, Kanini Fest, TECHNOQUEST- 2001, Erode, Tamilnadu held on Jan 24, 2001. Mahesweta Mishra and Nibedita Sahoo won the 3rd Prize in Technical Paper Presentation in Dyna Fest, TECHNOQUEST - 2001, Erode, Tamilnadu. Chinmay Pattnaik of 2000 batch has won the Third prize in the Vice Chancellor's English debate held at Berhampur University. Swarvanu Chatterjee of 1998 batch won the 1st prize in Debate and Debashis Mishra, Siba Shankar Rauto won the 3rd prize in Technical paper contest in Gyanjyoti 2001 (March 1-3, 2001) conducted by Hindustan College of Science & Technology, Farah, UP. Community Activities In the aftermath of the devastating cyclone that hit Orissa in October 1999, NISTians undertook relief activities in the nearby tehsils of Ganjam district and also in Cuttack district. They distributed rice, kerosene, candles, etc., to hundreds of villagers in the affected areas. NISTians have contributed financially to the Kargil War Fund to help the families of the martyrs of the war. They have also contributed financially to the Staines Leprosy home in Mayurbhanj in the memory of Late Staines and his two sons. Financial help has also been sent to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund to help the earthquake victims of Gujarat. We have also provided financial help to the victims of communal violence in Gujarat. ISTE Conference Two of our students( Debabrata Parida and Abhijit Bose) had participated in the recent ISTE Conference held in Bhubaneswar. Summer Training Our second year students went to IIT, Kanpur on summer training from May 15 to June 13, 2000 to learn JAVA, UNIX INTERNALS & SHELL PROGRAMMING. Sports and GamesNIST has facilities for regular sports and games such as cricket, table tennis, soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, gymnasium, water sports, etc. NIST is well represented in the Berhampur University teams. NIST is first institute in the state to introduce adventurous sports. First TURBO Windsurfing board arrived in 1998. Canoeing and Kayaking have been introduced lately. Paragliding and parasailing activities have also been introduced. Regular treks and mountain climbing expeditions have been organized. A Billiards/Pool table and table tennis has been provided for faculty recreation. An international size tennis court, basketball court and volleyball court are available on the campus. The Gym facility is available to all students along with Table Tennis and other indoor games in the Institute. Volleyball matches and Throwball matches are held in the Institute. In addition, each hostel has a Gym alongwith other outdoor and indoor games. Interhostel matches are held once a year. Plans are afoot for an indoor stadium to house squash courts, badminton, pool tables, bowling alley, swimming pool, etc. NISTians Achievements The NIST TT team won the champions trophy of Berhampur University. Our team comprising of Akash Kamal Swain (Captain, 1999 batch), Rajesh Kumar Panda (2000 batch), Susman Das and Anshuman Mishra (both of 2001 batch) defeated Rayagada College in the finals held on October 18, 2001. Akash K Swain was selected to play for the Berhampur University team in the National Level East Zone Table Tennis Championship 2002 held at Calcutta. Chinmoy Pattanayak of 2000 batch was selected to play for the Berhampur University Badminton team in the National Level East Zone Badminton Championship 2002 held at Bilaspur. Sudip Mishra (2001 batch) and Soumyajit Rath (1999 batch) were selected to play for Berhampur University team in the Inter University Cricket competition held at Bhagalpur. The teaching assistant (TA) program, a unique concept at NIST, was inaugurated with the induction of five TAs and three Economic Hardship scholarship holders in the fall of 1997. Teaching assistants are involved in helping the faculty in academic activities, working in funded projects etc. The Institute by way of financial assistance pays TAs and scholars. Assistantship and scholarship are award to the students primarily based on their scholastic achievements and economic hardship. A total of 15 TAships and 20 Economic harship scholarships are awarded every year Fall 2000 (7th Semester):
