Placement and Training Activities - An Overview

group photoThe Placement Office at NIST was setup in 1998. It has been able to attract the top IT companies of India for Campus Placement. The first batch of NISTians graduated in july 2000. Satyam Computer Services Ltd., Secunderabad was the very first company to have visited the NIST campus on 17th September 1999 and selected seven students from the batch graduating in 2000. Other companies that conducted campus placements were Orissa Cements Ltd, Rajgangpur, HCL Infosystems Ltd, New Delhi., Integra Microsystems Ltd, Bangalore and Service Selection Board.

Many students have also got admission into MBA program at XIM, Bhubaneswar, and other premier management Institutes. Some students have got scholarships from universities abroad for doing MS in USA. Many students have also joined the M Tech program after qualifying through GATE.

For the batch graduating in 2001, Campus Placement started in July 2000 with companies like Wipro Technologies, Bangalore, Satyam Computer Services Ltd., Secunderabad and IBM Global Services Ltd, visiting the campus. These companies conducted the campus recruitment activity and selected a large number of students. In September, 2000, HCL Infosystems from New Delhi visited the campus and selected many students. HCL’s visit was followed by Tata Steel from Jamshedpur. They conducted their campus recruitment activity and selected 9 students for the Jamshedpur unit. All the companies have expressed the desire to visit NIST next year once again. Service Selection Board (SSB) also conducted campus interviews and has shortlisted students for the next round of interviews. Infosys Technologies conducted an off-campus interview for our students at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, which consisted of the written test followed by an interview. Jatayu Software, Bangalore, joined the campus recruitment and selected 9 students for its WAP development work.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Calcutta, visited NIST for accreditation purposes for conducting Campus Placement. TCS held an off-campus selection program for our students and nine students were selected. CG-CoreEL which is hardware design company based at Bangalore selected students for their development center. Wipro Infotech too visited the campus and selected one student for its system integration services. Reisys (USA) have selected three students for their development center based at Washington, USA. Research Engineers, a Kolkata based company selected our students for their web-related multimedia projects. Patni Computer Systems in a all Orissa off-campus placement held at Bhubaneswar selected 12 of our students and 14 students from the rest of the engineering colleges of Orissa.

The Institute assists the students in arranging for summer training programs for the 3rd year and 2nd year students. The Institute has in the past organized specially designed summer programs for our students in top institutes of India, e.g., IIT, Kanpur. Third year students do their summer training at prestigious organizations like Wipro Technologies, TCS, Tata Infotech, Tata Steel, HCL Infosystems, ISRO, Motorola, NSTL, DRDO, Indian Telephone Industries, CBSI, NALCO, SAIL, IDCOL, NTPC, SAC, ITR, HAL, etc. The Institute also offers special summer courses on its own every year which are open to all students and working executives of Orissa. In the summer of 2002, the courses on VLSI Design and JALP (Java, Apache, Linux Programming) was offered which was attended by over 60 students and working professionals.

The Placement Department also conducts the Pre-Placement Training (PPT) for students of all batches as a regular feature of the curriculum. This helps the students develop skills in areas like Aptitude tests, Vocabulary tests, Spoken English, Analytical Reasoning, Group Discussion Skills and Interview Skills. This will enable them to take advantage of all the campus recruitment activities.

The Institute conducts intensive training programs on GRE, TOEFL (for admission to post-graduate programs in US and foreign universities) and MBA Entrance examinations. The Institute also conducts preparatory course for GATE (used for admission to M.Tech programs in India).
