The second NIST e-news was widely circulated among all parents, industry, government, alumni, etc. I have received numerous congratulations and positive feedback on this effort. I urge all students and faculty to strive harder to achieve laurels which we can then celebrate through E-news. On my recent trip to Delhi, I was privileged to demonstrations of various technologies but the one that took the cake was that of video conferencing. At NIC headquarters, I had a demo Video Conference with government officials of all North Eastern states(Tripura, Manipur, Assam, etc) and including Berhampur RDC office. My special congratulations to Pradeep Roy of 7th semester for having scored over 99 percentile in GATE (Computer Science) - a first at NIST. May his tribe grow!!
April 15, 2002 (Sangram Mudali)
First of all I would like to mention some encouraging statistics. Our first decision was to send the NISTe_News through intranet only (to faculty, staff and alumni), then we decided for 100 hardcopies. But we had to finally print 1300 copies (Vol-1). The next issue(Vol-2) was printed 1400 copies, but soon we had to order for another 500 copies and then again for 350 copies... an exponential increment!!!
It is a great pleasure to get so much cooperation from all to take NIST-e News to its success. Each and every success starts with a thought or an idea and it is the IDEA ruling in every mind that greatly helps a newsletter to reach its point of success. The ideas and achievements of our student's and faculties are making this newsletter more and more popular day by day. I do hope to get more ideas from all to bring many more success for NIST e-News. I must mention the name of Mr Ajit Kr Barisal who is trying his best in bringing a lot of good news for us. Our ex-students also have started to share their ideas for NISTe_News. Thanks to all of you.
I am adding a new page named "Career Corner" for students. This will contain the information about higher education, job finding, courses towards job and suggestions.
I am keeping all the messages of students in the "Students Corner" as per reader's suggestion. I would like to request all the well-wishers of NISTe_News to send their suggestion for its betterment. Thanking you all.

Directors party at Hotel MOTI
A grand party was thrown on 16th of March by our honorable Director to celebrate the birth of his daughter Neha and to introduce sweet Neha to the NIST family. It may be also said to be a relief for the NISTians amidst the busy schedule. Mr Indranath Bhattacharyya who was the event manager did a wonderful job to keep the festivity lively. THANKS to Mr. Vinay Kumar Das for his active participation to make the program successful!! ..Many events were organized. The interesting parts were the duet songs by the couples, musical chair for the ladies, jokes shared by the NISTians and last but not the least were the delicious dishes. The kids were seen enjoying the ice-cream to their utmost!!! Our placement Director Mrs Geetika Mudali gave prizes to the winner and runners up of the musical chair. It was the active participation of all the members of the NIST family that made NEHAS PARTY a great success.
NISTians won the challenge..
Our students Satwik Das, Soumyendra Kanungo
and Swastik Rath of 1997 batch got admission for pursuing MBA in

My dear sangram
My heartiest congratulations regarding the newsletter. You are all doing a wonderful job. Could you keep a subscribe command to your newsletter? Then I may circulate the same to all oits members referring them to give the subscribe command in the subject field so that they will automatically have a copy of the newsletter. I was thinking that we should also have some thing of this type from oits.

From Dr. S C Bose of IC Design Center, CEERI, Pilani to our Honourable Director, Mr Sangram Mudali
Dear Sangram,
Thanks for the NIST e-News. It really updates the information regarding NIST. I could find from your e-NEWS that some of your students keep sending mails to NIST (specifically to geetika madam). This is really very healthy to be in touch with ex-students. Also these students can be requested to spread the good image of NIST among their colleagues.
Please convey my congratulations to Dr. Ajit Panda for the UGC Post Doctorate Research Award for the project on GaN based MODFET. I also understand that you are planning a summer course on VLSI this year.
I will suggest that your faculty (related to VLSI) also should start some work on MOS based analog design in addition to digital design. Best wishes

Student Services from our website .
To facilitate convenience and transparency to the students and their parents/guardians, NIST has started the distribution of student services through Website (www.nist.edu). In the first phase, the Mid-Semester and Pre-final marks of the 1st semester (2001 batch) is now available on our website. To ensure privacy, students/parents have been provided with a password. This is a unique and novel service being provided by NIST.

Student Counselling Services has been established
Student Counselling Services(SCS) was suggested in the first issue of NIST e-News (Vol-1) and now, it is established in our Institute. At the first phase, the SCS has been started for the 1999 batch. Each faculty member has taken the responsibility of 10 students from 1999 batch. The aim of the SCS is to allow closer interaction between the faculty members and students. Student(s) should use the experience and the wisdom of the faculty counsellor and should discuss with him/her any issue in a friendly, lively and homely atmosphere. The counsellor will assist the student in solving his/her problems. The counsellor will also be in touch with the parents of the student for any emergency, like medical help, etc. The faculty counsellor is a guide to the student. All the students and parents are advised to co-operate in this very unique service. The Student Counselling Services will be gradually extended to all semesters at the earliest.

Hi to Everyone,
It's been 6 months of worklife, and I can tell every student of our college that life at NIST was GREAT so enjoy it when you are there. I have been closely reading the web site and each time I read through the articles, I miss those times we spent there.
I am writing this to all those guys who have a inner desire to revolt against the system as I was one of you guys and now after entering a different life I would like you to give you some things from my experience.
1. All those years I used to feel that Reddy sir was pushing too much in programming but I can tell you something all those who will follow the road shown by him will be successful and I can give you examples. For those who followed his advice, the training we get in companies was a peace of cake but for me who took the path taken by many "training was full of thorns".
2.I used to feel that submitting assignments, projects in time were just to harass us but believe me those are the things that matter in job.
3 .MARKS MARKS that was our slogan for four years but I realise now, if I had worked like I am working here, marks would have come. So dears, it's not the fault of teachers, it is the fault with us, those last minute crams don't work out at all times.
Lot of advice, but I really feel bad for my immediate juniors as I was close to them and I think they should rethink there career plans a bit. To all my teachers I take this an opportunity to thank all of you. I really appreciate all that you have given me.
To Reddy Sir I want to tell something that I could never tell you,"I will prove it to you one day that I am also good in C programming " I will remember throughout my life, the December holidays of 99 when you had detained me to do C programming. How are you Sir? you have been a source of inspiration to all of us and I am realising it now.
I think this idea of ENews is fantastic. At least we can also contribute and know the things happening in the college where we spent four years of our life..
BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE

Life is Hard ...Play Harder to Win
From Dr. Reddy:
Dear Ashish! Thanks for your wonderful comments! It is always great to hear from one of my
students that we are on the right track. But please focus on some loftier goals - C
Programming is not life - there is definitely more to life than it. What I am waiting to
see is an Ashish Behera more successful than me, more famous, more disciplined, more
hardworking, and more [optional_parameter_list] than me. That and that alone, not C
programming, will make a proud teacher!! Best of luck in all your endeavors in life!!

Hello Geetika Mam,
I am presently working in Stream Tracmail, a Dallas based e-CRM company at Mumbai.
Hope everything at Bam is fine and NIST is growing by leaps and bounds.
Yesterday, I visited the NIST website and found the photograph of the new
building. It's massive and very imposing.... It would be fun if the NIST
alumni could come together sometime to relive the old experiences... Hope Sangram Sir and
Dr. Reddy are doing fine and so are all the other faculty members. Rest all fine.

Subject: about my applications
Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2002 17:30:14 +0530
Dear Panda Sir,
I trust you would be hale and hearty, by the grace of God. In response to the applications
I had send, mostly I got rejections. But I have got an offer from Iowa State University,
Ames for Ph.D. studies in Physics and Astronomy, along with the offer of Teaching
Assistantship. This offer seems to be really good, the College is a middle Tier College.
But it has some good current Research work going on in Gamma Ray Astronomy, in which I am
interested.
I have got the I20 form to apply for VISA. I guess I will wait a couple of weeks to hear from the other colleges for any other offer, but that chance is slim.
I am really happy to get this offer, and will definitely go this year if I get the VISA. This would not have been possible without your guidance and recommendation. I will always be grateful for that.
Thank you once again. Please tell me what do you think of this offer and this College.

Summer Training
Program - 2002
(An Employment Oriented Training Program offered by NTCS)
Prasanna Pati
Beyond the regular academic curriculum, the NIST Training & Consultancy Services(NTCS) has stepped in offering various kinds of employment oriented software engineering courses since 2001. This was initiated by Dr Ravi P Reddy & Dr Ajit Kumar Panda. In 2001, summer course it was continued from May 14 to June 9. It was a great success with more than 80 students in three different courses. Out of the three, one course was exclusively for NIST 3rd Semester students, in which 29 NISTians had registered. In the rest two courses students from other colleges and persons from industry had participated.
This year (2002) also NTCS is going to offer five professional courses such as
1. Objects & Components in C++, JAVA & VB
2. Electronic Design Automation Software Tools for VLSI/ASIC Design
3. Enterprise Application Development Using JAVA, Apache, Linux and PostgreSQL
4. (1). Using UML & C++ for OOP
(2). Web Programming using HTML 4, PHP, CGI Scripts.
5. Multitier Enterprise Application Development Using VB 6 & Postgre SQL.
These courses will continue from May 20th, 2002 to June 15th, 2002. It will be for 4 weeks(6days per week and 8 hours per day). The course details are available on Internet at www.nistinfo.com/summer2002 and at NTCS. For registration, contact me at NTCS.
C-NANCE Course at NIST in collaboration with AICTE & SUN Microsystems
Prasanna Pati
We are proud to announce that, NIST has bagged the credit of being selected as one of the few "Centre for National Academic Network for Continuing Education" (C-NANCE) by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The C-NANCE program scheme is aimed at providing continuing education to students/professionals on advanced technologies of the world so that they are globally competitive and more employable. For this, AICTE has entered into an MOU with SUN Microsystems to provide quality training on emerging technologies in IT related areas. Under this program, NIST, SUN Microsystems and AICTE are offering short-term courses at subsidized prices through its C-NANCE centers.
One batch of this course has already been started and we are planning to start the next batch very soon. To instruct the course, Dr. Ravi P. Reddy(Ph.D) and Mr. Shom P. Das (B.E.), have undergone an intensive 15 days "Train-the-Trainer" program at New Delhi conducted by Sun Microsystems. In addition to that, they are both Sun Certified Java Programmers having cleared the online certification exam conducted by Sun Microsystems.
All students are invited to avail this golden opportunity to build a great career by learning Java based Information Technology (IT) courses designed and developed by the international
software giants, Sun Microsystems, USA, and being offered at subsidized prices through NIST. The course details are available on Internet at http://www.nistinfo.com/sunasec. For registration please contact me at NTCS.
He is very popular as AO Sir. Some of us know him as Mr H N
Mudali. But very few of us know his full name Hruda Nanda Mudali, the eldest person of
NIST. He is originated from a respectable family of Cuttack, Orissa. He got married to Mrs
Sailabala Mudali in 1955. He has three daughters, all of them are married and well
established. Two of them are staying at SAIL, RSP, Rourkela and the youngest one is at
NALCO, Angul. Mr Mudali graduated from the Ravenshaw college, Cuttack in 1954. After
completing the B.Ed degree from the Radhanath Training College, Cuttack, he joined in a
High School as the Assistant Head Master and was there for two years. After that he joined
the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), at Rourkela Steel Plant(RSP) in 1958. He worked there
for 32 years. Then he retired from RSP as an Assistant Manager (Administration) in 1990.
He then joined NIST in 1996. Since then he has been showing his skills and effectiveness
in all the administrative activities. He is very popular in the campus for his good
behaviour, positive thinking, good attitude and coolness. NISTians wish him a long and
happy life!!
Sangram Mudali
The swanky, glass and concrete, six-sided new
building of NIST has raised quite a many eyebrows. Comparisons (:-}) have been made with
the Pentagon of Washington, DC. The multi-storied, multi-use complex houses the Cafeteria
in its 1st floor, the Central Computer Laboratory and Tutorial rooms in its 2nd floor and
the Library in the 3rd Floor. The Cafeteria boasts of an all stainless steel cooking
infrastructure with steam boiler driven cooking range, food warmer trays, food carts,
hot/cold cleaning, etc. The cafeteria is equipped to feed more than 2000 people at short
notice. A large kitchen garden managed by our Mess staff is already providing fresh
supplies to our kitchen. The focus on hygeine and eco-friendliness is all pervasive. The
centrally air-conditioned computer laboratory on the 2nd floor is home to about 100
computers, which are networked and will be shortly connected to the main Institute servers
through an optical fiber link. The six tutorial rooms can seat 60 students each. The
Library has space of 15000 sq. ft in two floors. It has a glass and steel look with a
gridded glass dome for aesthetics and light. There is seating space for more than 500
students. The library will have a separate CD and multimedia section and a separate space
for research/study purposes. The library will be equipped with multiple computer touch
screen kiosks for student use. The NIST Intranet will also be available in the library for
downloading instruction and course materials from the net. Student/faculty communication
will be enhanced tremendously through this facility to be made available in the Library.
The Octagon was the venue of CIT 2001 and was host to over 250 national and international delegates. The building was highly appreciated by the delegates.
Though the concept of the Octagon was conceived by the Director and Dr. Reddy, it was given shape by Dr. Uma Kanta Behera, renowned architect and engineer of Rourkela. We thank the S.M.Charitable Educational Trust Construction Team for the execution of this marvellous building.
