The second NIST e-news was widely circulated among all parents, industry, government, alumni, etc. I have received numerous congratulations and positive feedback on this effort. I urge all students and faculty to strive harder to achieve laurels which we can then celebrate through E-news. On my recent trip to Delhi, I was privileged to demonstrations of various technologies but the one that took the cake was that of video conferencing. At NIC headquarters, I had a demo Video Conference with government officials of all North Eastern states(Tripura, Manipur, Assam, etc) and including Berhampur RDC office. My special congratulations to Pradeep Roy of 7th semester for having scored over 99 percentile in GATE (Computer Science) - a first at NIST. May his tribe grow!!

First of all I would like to mention some encouraging statistics. Our first decision was to send the NISTe_News through intranet only (to faculty, staff and alumni), then we decided for 100 hardcopies. But we had to finally print 1300 copies (Vol-1). The next issue(Vol-2) was printed 1400 copies, but soon we had to order for another 500 copies and then again for 350 copies... an exponential increment!!!
It is a great pleasure to get so much cooperation from all to take NIST-e News to its success. Each and every success starts with a thought or an idea and it is the IDEA ruling in every mind that greatly helps a newsletter to reach its point of success. The ideas and achievements of our student's and faculties are making this newsletter more and more popular day by day. I do hope to get more ideas from all to bring many more success for NIST e-News. I must mention the name of Mr Ajit Kr Barisal who is trying his best in bringing a lot of good news for us. Our ex-students also have started to share their ideas for NISTe_News. Thanks to all of you. I am adding a new page named "Career Corner" for students. This will contain the information about higher education, job finding, courses towards job and suggestions. I am keeping all the messages of students in the "Students Corner" as per reader's suggestion. I would like to request all the well-wishers of NISTe_News to send their suggestion for its betterment. Director’s party at Hotel MOTI
A grand party was thrown on 16th of March by our honorable Director to celebrate the birth of his daughter Neha and to introduce sweet Neha to the NIST family. It may be also said to be a relief for the NISTians amidst the busy schedule. Mr Indranath Bhattacharyya who was the event manager did a wonderful job to keep the festivity lively. THANKS to Mr. Vinay Kumar Das for his active participation to make the program successful!! ..Many events were organized. The interesting parts were the duet songs by the couples, musical chair for the ladies, jokes shared by the NISTians and last but not the least were the delicious dishes. The kids were seen enjoying the ice-cream to their utmost!!! Our placement Director Mrs Geetika Mudali gave prizes to the winner and runners up of the musical chair. It was the active participation of all the members of the NIST family that made NEHA’S PARTY a great success. NISTians won the challenge.. Our students Satwik Das, Soumyendra Kanungo and Swastik Rath of 1997 batch got admission for pursuing MBA in XIM Bhubanewsar(Satwik and Soumyendra) and Goa Institute of Management, Goa (Swastik) . To facilitate convenience and transparency to the students and their parents/guardians, NIST has started the distribution of student services through Website (www.nist.edu). Student Counselling Services has been established…
Student Counselling Services(SCS) was suggested in the first issue of NIST e-News (Vol-1) and now, it is established in our Institute. At the first phase, the SCS has been started for the 1999 batch. Each faculty member has taken the responsibility of 10 students from 1999 batch. The aim of the SCS is to allow closer interaction between the faculty members and students. Student(s) should use the experience and the wisdom of the faculty counsellor and should discuss with him/her any issue in a friendly, lively and homely atmosphere. The counsellor will assist the student in solving his/her problems. The counsellor will also be in touch with the parents of the student for any emergency, like medical help, etc. The faculty counsellor is a guide to the student. All the students and parents are advised to co-operate in this very unique service. The Student Counselling Services will be gradually extended to all semesters at the earliest. Welcome Mr Azad Mahmud…. We are happy to welcome Mr Azad Mahmud in our NIST family. Mr Azad has a very good academic background and a long industrial experience. He did his MS from the University of Tennessee, USA in Bio-medical Engineering and B.Tech from the Calcutta University in the area of Instrumentation Engineering. Before getting admitted to MS, he worked for the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. for nine years. He also worked for Kharafi National, Kuwait as a Maintenance engineer. NISTians wish you all success…... Games'2002… The inter-batch competition of 2002 has started on March 18, 2002 at NIST. The events are - CARROM, CHESS, CARTOON DRAWING, PAINTING, VOLLEY BALL and CRICKET. Around 125 students participated in these different events. The indoor games are being played at OCTAGON and, the cricket, volleyball are at the NIST cricket and volley ball ground. Mr Vinay Kr. Students Corner NISTians achievement at the National Level competition.. Congrats!! Satyabrata Jit (5th Semester ELE) and Ashutosh Pradhan(5th Semester ELE) for being the winner in the paper presentation at the National Technical Convention named "TECHNO ORIENTATION-2002" held at OIST, Bhopal, on March 19 –24, 2002. They presented their paper in Electronics and Electrical Section. Keep it up!! Winner at the AAKRUTHI-2002 …. Susmita Priyadarshini(7th Semester ECE) and Sandeepa Behera(7th Semester CSE) won the prize for their paper presentation in a National Level Technical Symposium named AAKRUTHI-2002 held on March 16-17, 2002 in the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of Osmania University, Hyderabad. CONGRATS!! Once again for your achievement. Prize won by Susmita and Sandeepa Susmita Priyadarshini(7th Semester ECE) and Sandeepa Behera(7th Semester CSE) won the first prize for their paper presentation in CONCEPTS –2002, at Pune, on March 14, 2002. Workshop on "Embedded Systems" by Trendz IT at NIST campus Trendz Information Technologies Ltd. presented a one day workshop on Embedded Systems at the Lecture Hall building on April 06, 2002 from 9:30AM to 5:30PM. Our deputy Director inaugurated the workshop and Mr. N. B. Iyer (Embedded Application, RISC Computing Technology) shared his knowledge with us and gave our students a first hand account of how-to-go about embedded systems. They discussed the various techniques used for Embedded Systems and their Applications. A large number of enthusiastic students (5th and 7th semester), faculty and staff participated in the workshop. The program included a demonstration of Motorola & ARM boards and an interactive session. We look forward to more such career seminars on latest technologies. I have been closely reading the web site and each time I read through the articles, I miss those times we spent there. I am writing this to all those guys who have a inner desire to revolt against the system as I was one of you guys and now after entering a different life I would like you to give you some things from my experience. 1. All those years I used to feel that Reddy sir was pushing too much in programming but I can tell you something all those who will follow the road shown by him will be successful and I can give you examples. For those who followed his advice, the training we get in companies was a peace of cake but for me who took the path taken by many "training was full of thorns". 2.I used to feel that submitting assignments, projects in time were just to harass us but believe me those are the things that matter in job. 3 .MARKS MARKS that was our slogan for four years but I realise now, if I had worked like I am working here, marks would have come. So dears, it's not the fault of teachers, it is the fault with us, those last minute crams don't work out at all times. Lot of advice, but I really feel bad for my immediate juniors as I was close to them and I think they should rethink there career plans a bit. To all my teachers I take this an opportunity to thank all of you. I really appreciate all that you have given me. To Reddy Sir I want to tell something that I could never tell you,"I will prove it to you one day that I am also good in C programming " I will remember throughout my life, the December holidays of 99 when you had detained me to do C programming. How are you Sir? you have been a source of inspiration to all of us and I am realising it now. I think this idea of ENews is fantastic. At least we can also contribute and know the things happening in the college where we spent four years of our life.. But I have got an offer from Iowa State University, Ames for Ph.D. studies in Physics and Astronomy, along with the offer of Teaching Assistantship. This offer seems to be really good, the College is a middle Tier College. But it has some good current Research work going on in Gamma Ray Astronomy, in which I am interested. I have got the I20 form to apply for VISA. I guess I will wait a couple of weeks to hear from the other colleges for any other offer, but that chance is slim. I am really happy to get this offer, and will definitely go this year if I get the VISA. This would not have been possible without your guidance and recommendation. This was initiated by Dr Ravi P Reddy & Dr Ajit Kumar Panda. In 2001, summer course it was continued from May 14 to June 9. C-NANCE Course at NIST in collaboration with AICTE & SUN Microsystems Prasanna Pati We are proud to announce that, NIST has bagged the credit of being selected as one of the few "Centre for National Academic Network for Continuing Education" (C-NANCE) by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The C-NANCE program scheme is aimed at providing continuing education to students/professionals on advanced technologies of the world so that they are globally competitive and more employable.
