Message from the Director

Thanks Partha for volunteering to be the Editor of the NIST e-News. I congratulate you on the publication of the first issue. NIST e-News will be a unique forum for the exchange of news, views, ideas and proposals.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. C. Nahak for obtaining his first grant from the Department of Science & Technology to carry out his research work. I want to encourage all others to write research proposals for submission to DoE, DST, UGC, AICTE, etc. As they say, it is better to have tried and failed than not to try at all.

I have noticed a certain air of cheerfulness since a few weeks. Maybe it is rose garden in full bloom or the noisy games of Volleyball, Tennis & Cricket. Oh yes, the cheerfulness came from Room 303! I hear quite a few of our faculty and staff are now good TT champs and Pool champs.

I am submitting a proposal for the NIST Student Counselling Services. I would like to have your opinion on it. We should be able to implement it very soon.

With Best Wishes to NIST E-news

February 15, 2002 (Sangram Mudali)

Message From Deputy Directors Desk

Partha requested me to write something for the first issue of NIST e-News. I told him my message is 'Peace and Love' for all. Thanks Partha. Wish all the success of NIST e-News.

February 15, 2002 (Ravi P Reddy)

Message from Deans Desk

I am happy to know that Partha has voluntarily taken the responsibility of NIST e-News. The NIST e-News will speak on behalf of all NISTians, now and always. It is the forum where we will share our feelings, ideas and information. It has started its journey and will continue for all the to come. CONGRATS!! Partha for your excellent start…

Message From Editor's Desk

It is a great pleasure for me to present the first issue of NIST e-News at your desk. The NIST e-News is taking the responsibility to bring us closer together, because it will express our views, feelings, ideas and thought to all NISTians. Although I am sending this first issue only to faculty members, gradually it will reach to all the staff, students and their parents/guardians. It will be circulated only through the electronic medium, i.e NIST Web pages, NIST Alumni e-directory and NIST student e-mailing lists.

We plan on adding an Alumni Page, so batches of 1996 & 1997 are welcome to contribute for future issues. All submissions to the editor must be through Intranet /email and no paper submission will be accepted. The Editor reserves the right to reject/reduce or modify submissions for reasons of brevity, typos, correctness, suitability etc.

I feel happy to write here that, NIST e-News has received a large number of articles, poems, quizes, messages etc. for its first issue. But I could not publish all of them in order to meet the page limit. I will see them first for the next issue. I regret for any type of your dissatisfaction.

Each and every faculty, some of our students and staff helped me at their best for this successful start. I am very much pleased and grateful for the words of encouragement I got from our Director and Dean. Thanking you all.

   Special News
DST grant of Dr. Chandal Nahak
  • We are proud of our dear colleague Dr. Chandal Nahak who has got a grant of a few lacs from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India under the SERC fast track proposals for Young Scientists 2001-2002 scheme. The title of his proposal is "Studies on the unconstrained reformulation of constrained optimal control problems".
NIST Student Counselling Services
  • We welcome the proposal of our director about the "NIST Student Counselling Services". The aims and objectives of the "NIST Student Counselling Services" are:
  1. To be an interface between the student and the Institute
  2. To provide guidance to the students in their academic matters such as methods of learning, difficulties, additional coaching requirements, examination problems, attendance, etc
  3. To listen and to help students having difficulties
  4. To inform the parents of the students performance and problems. The Counselor will immediately contact parents when parent intervention is required.
  5. To provide a "home away from home" for the student, i.e., counselor to meet students in an informal gathering to provide a setting for trust, honest communication and guidance.
  6. To provide extra attention to first year students in settling down at NIST. All efforts must be made to provide a comfortable atmosphere for them.

At this stage only faculty members can become Counselors. Each counselor will be assigned a maximum of 10 students of each batch, i.e., a total of 40 students per faculty. He/She can meet them on a rotation basis as per his/her convenience. Counselors must maintain record of issues and problems that affect any student. He/she must take steps for redressal of those problems or bring it to the attention of the higher authorities. There will be a meeting of all counselors at least once a month to discuss common issues and problems. The expenses of each counselor incurred in the process will be borne by the Institute on production of expense vouchers.

MATLAB Manual by Dr Partha S Mallick

Dr Partha S Mallick has recently compiled a manual for Quick learning of MATLAB. It will help you to learn the software MATLAB version 5.3. Also, you will be able to learn the three important Toolboxes using this version of MATLAB. These are- Symbolic Math Toolbox, Control System Toolbox and Signal Processing Toolbox. The Step-by-Step procedure given in that manual will ease your learning. You may collect it from library, Sagar Xerox or from Dr Partha S Mallick.
