DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES

INTRODUCTION

In 2017 the Institute has started its Science Program under the banner of School of Sciences with M.Sc program under Berhampur University. In 2018 it also got the affiliation for B. Sc. courses.

With a conspicuous beginning in the Core building, the new laboratories, class rooms, and library were designed by the visionary faculty team. The research activities gradually increased, and the department attained formidable reputation for the effort of its teacher and its finest teaching in the state of Odisha.

Under the School of Sciences there are three departments. Each of these department run both B. Sc. And M. Sc. Program.

Departments:

Department of Pure and Applied Physics

The Department of Pure and Applied Physics of National Institute of Science and Technology, Berhampur was started in the year 1996 as a part of the BTech programme. It has highly qualified and experienced faculty members. It is one of the most active departments of this institution. It is commendable that, the entire faculties are actively involved in research in various fields such as nano-electronics, Optics, and Nanotechnology. Already having 5 doctorates (50%), all the remaining faculty are pursuing their research and expected to be awarded PhD very soon. In this way, the department is heading towards the goal of attaining 100% doctorates as its faculty. In addition to the full strength of BTech of all branches for first year the department also providing MSc, BSc (Honours) with Berhampur University affiliation. The department is also very active in PhD programme.

Vision:

  1. The vision of the Department of Pure and Applied Physics Physics is to furnish students to compete and contribute to the varying technology- centered advancements.
  2. To motivate the students to become technocrats, so that they become builders of modern society in general and the country at large.
  3. To train the minds of young engineers towards application oriented by providing students with multiple learning opportunities like Activity based learning, formal courses with integrated laboratory, virtual Lab, research projects and colloquium programs.

Mission:

  1. To awaken the young minds and discover their talents both in theory and in practical Physics, through dedication to teaching, commitment to students and innovative instructional methods like physical demonstration, PPT and visual aids.
  2. To make vital contributions in areas of emphasis such as faculty, modern labs, Department library and demonstrate a high level of competence in the study of Engineering Physics.
  3. To promotes the highest ethical principles in scientific research, critical thinking, openness to social, scientific, technological and educational changes, as well as the working autonomy at the University, both scientific and educational.

Objectives:

To explore and extend high standards in teaching pedagogy. A variety of objectives are designed such as:

  1. To develop the sprit of enquiry.
  2. To assimilate education and research by incorporating recent discoveries, modern techniques into the curriculum.
  3. To encourage inter-disciplinary thinking by providing students with educational and research opportunities.

HOD:

Dr. Debashis Panda completed his PhD from IIT Kharagpur. After that he joined as a post doctoral fellow at Department of Electronics and Communication Engg., National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, and Department of Electrical and Computer Engg., University of Utah, USA. Prior to join in the department of Physics and Electronics Engg., National Institute of Science and Technology, Berhampur, India, Dr. Panda also served as a post doctoral fellow at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engg., National University of Singapore, Singapore. Recently Dr. Panda awarded INSA summer research fellowship 2017.

Department of Chemistry

The Teaching on Engineering Chemistry started at NIST from the inception in 1996 and was confined in the first year of B.Tech sullabus only. In 2016 Engineering Chemistry has been changed to Applied Chemistry with change in the earlier syllabus of first year B.Tech Under Bijupattnaik university of Technology. In 2017 the institute started with M.Sc chemistry and in 2018 B.Sc.(honors) programmes under Berhampur University and chemistry teaching extended for 2yrs M.Sc and 3yr B.Sc courses. With a conspicuous beginning in the Core building, the new laboratories, class rooms, and library were designed by the visionary faculty team. The research activities gradually increased, and the department attained formidable reputation for the effort of integrating chemistry in electronics and its finest teaching in the state of Odisha. With an advent of the new era of materials and the young and energetic faculty members, the department is marching forward in newer areas of research and teaching.

Vision:

  1. The vision of the Department of chemistry is well known for its excellence in teaching and research.
  2. The faculty members of the department are engaged in state of the art research as well as guiding the Ph.D., M. Sc. Students..

Mission:

  1. The department has made great strides by conducting regular seminar and conferences and the students have exposed of writing scientific journal paper, Project and also develop communication skill.
  2. Collaborative research programmes with many research laboratories and research institutes in India and abroad are also operating very successfully with mutual benefit.

HOD:

Dr. Duryodhan Sahu has completed M.Sc in Organic chemistry from Berhampur University then he did Ph.D at National Chiao-Tung Univiersity, Taiwan, in the year 2010. After Ph.D. he went for postdoctoral research at Research centre for applied sciences Academia Sinica, Taiwan in the year 2010-2011. He has published 17 International journals with SCI impact factor and has 491 citations with H-Index 11. He is the Co-PI of UKIERI project and also visited Brunel University, London as a visiting researcher in the year 2016. His research expertise covers wide areas including Organic solar cell, Nanocomposites for electro-optical applications, synthesis of polymeric materials and characterization etc. He has 12 years of research and Teaching experiences both in India and abroad.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is as old as NIST. It started with the engineering courses and presently it is a full fledged Department. Currently, in this Department 14 faculty members are there. All the faculties are Doctorate and Post Doctorate degree holders from various reputed and prestigious Institutes/Universities of India as well across the Globe. Up to 2016, the Department was fully dedicated for the skill development of under graduate as well as post graduate engineering students. In the year 2017, NIST started the new chapter by introducing M.Sc in Mathematics with it’s young and energetic faculty members. As an integral part of M.Sc program, B.Sc (Mathematics Honours) is started in 2018. The Department of Mathematics is well known for its excellence in teaching and research. Apart from the teaching, the faculty members actively engaged in research and guiding the Ph.D., M. Sc. students. As the consequence many faculties of our department as quite good number of publications in various journals of National and International reputes. Many faculties are doing the collaborator work with the member of other Institutes/Universities. Some faculties got the research project grant from different organization of Government of India like SERB(DST), NBHM(DAE).
