SECOND SEMESTER
(COMMON TO ALL BRANCHES)
PYSICS-II
FULL MARKS: 50. TIME 2 HOURS.
1. Relativity:
Postulates of special theory of relativity, time dilation, length contraction, velocity addition, mass-energy equivalence.
2. Quantum Mechanics:
Wave particle duality of matter, de Brogle concept of matter waves, Schrodinger equation and its solution of finding energy levels of a particle enclosed in one-dimensional potential box of infinite length.
3. Particle-like behavior of radiation:
Photo electric effect, Compton effect, pair production and annihilation (brief).
4. Crystallography:
Crystals, lattices, unit cells, lattice parameters, different cubic system, hexagonal close packed lattice, calculation of atomic radius, atoms per unit cell, density of packing of sc, fcc and bcc lattices.
5. Band theory of solids:
Motion of electrons in periodic potential, Kronig Penney model (qualitative). E-k diagram. Billouin zones, classification of solids into metals, semiconductors, insulators. Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors,
6. Magnetic materials:
Classification of substance into dia, para and ferromagnetic solids on the basis of magnetic behaviour, Lengevin theory of dia and paramagnetisms.
7. Superconductivity
Zero resistivity, critical field, Meissner effect, Type I and Type II superconductors, critical temperature.
