How do I choose a college for a career in engineering?

This is the most crucial decision. See the following few things before finalizing a college for your career in engineering:

  • The Promoter: Should be an academician of repute.
  • Faculty: Faculty details should be there in the college website with educational qualifications (M.Tech, PhD etc.), photos and publications. Quality of institutes like IITs/IIScs/NITs/Foreign Universities from which the faculty members had their education is also important.
  • Age of the Institute: Older colleges with good track record should be preferred first as the continual growth of these colleges can be seen in terms of student strength, alumni base, infrastructure, placement, university results, and public perception.
  • Ranking of Colleges: This must be one of the major yardsticks while choosing a college. Students must see the ranking of the colleges through various organizations, both government and private agencies.
  • Research: Grants received from government and others for research activities should be mentioned in the website.
  • Labs: Research labs should be available besides the regular UG/PG Labs.
  • Placement: See the history of placement since the inception of the college along with the average salary offered. It should have the companies name and the name of the recruited students. Only mention of companies does not serve the purpose.
  • Alumni Positions: Well established alumni speak volumes about the institute's success.
  • Industry Perceptions: Recognition by top Industries glorify the reputation of the college.
  • International Collaborations: One should see to the collaborations the college has with foreign universities. How do I choose my branch?

To choose your branch correctly, first, you should know your passion. Second, you should talk to some of your seniors who are doing engineering. Third, you can consult someone who is working as an engineer in some organization. Your decision should not be based on your friend's decisions as everybody's interest is different.

What is my option for branch change if I don’t get the desired one at the time of admission?

As per the university guidelines one can change one's branch in the second year provided he/she gets a CGPA of 8.0 in the first year. Moreover, one doesn't need to change the branch as he/she gets the option of keeping the minor paper from his/her desired branch from second year onward. For example: one can join Mechanical Engineering and minor in Computer Science Engineering.


 
 
What is the concept of Honours and Major & Minor papers in Engineering?

For the first time BPUT has introduced three choices for students to complete their graduation: Know More....

  • B.Tech Regular: Traditional B.Tech degree with 190 credits
  • B.Tech Degree (Honours): In addition to the 190 credits, interested students can take one extra paper each semester (additional credit points) starting from 3rd to 7th from his own discipline.
  • (Benefit: Will help students who are going for higher studies like MS or PhD)
  • B.Tech with Major and Minor Specialization: Interested students can pursue their studies in their discipline (190 credit points) in which they have been admitted (as major) and minor in another discipline. (Benefit: Will help students to have dual specialization and thereby increase their job prospect in multiple domains)


 
 
Will I get any financial help from the college during my studies?

Yes. There are many financial aids which are provided during your graduation. They are:

  • Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme : Provided to 5% students whose family annual income is less than 4.5 lakhs.
  • Merit Scholarship: Provided to students who score 9.0 or more in their university examinations.
  • Teaching Assistantship: Top scorers of each subject are given Teaching Assistantship Scholarship of amount Rs. 1200/- per month.
  • Research Assistantship: A sum of Rs. 1200/- per month is provided to students who assist their teachers in doing research.
  • Travel Grant Scholarship: Provided to all students whose papers are accepted in India or abroad for research presentation.
  • Book Grant Scholarship: Books are made free for students who are economically backward.
  • Economic Hardship Scholarship: A stipend amount of Rs. 1200/- per month is given to the economically backward students.
  • Faculty and Staff Sponsored Scholarships: A stipend amount of Rs. 1000 per month is given to around 40-50 students who excel in curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Shiv Shankar Bisoi Scholarship: An amount of Rs. 25000 is given to deserving candidates for excelling in academics.
  • M.Tech Scholarship: A stipend of Rs. 3000 per month is given to all M.Tech students without GATE score and Rs. 10000 per month is given to students with GATE score.


 
 
What is the fee structure of the college? Does it have any hidden fees?

The fee structure is as per the guidelines of the government of Odisha. There are no hidden fees.


 
 
Can I pay my college fees in installments?

There is no provision of paying fees in installments. But if you're taking a bank loan for studies then you can submit an application to the account section. On the basis of the application, the date may be extended till December of the joining year (only for the first year students).


 
 
Will I get hostel facility if I join the college? If yes, then will it be available for one year or for four years?

Separate hostel facility, for both boys and girls, is available on campus. The boys hostel has the capacity of 1300 students and the girls hostel of 650 students. It is provided for all four years.


 
 
How about hostel food?

Our hostels accommodate students from 14 different states of India. Because of such diversity, our hostels try to provide food which can satiate their nutritional needs and also please their taste buds. From time to time we give students some regional delicacies. The everyday food is hygienic, less greasy and less spicy. We serve both veg. and non-veg. foods every day.


 
 
Is the campus ragging free? What action is taken against the violators?

NIST campus is ragging-free. The anti-ragging squad keeps the campus free from all sorts of ragging. The NIST Rule Book lays down strict punishment including suspension or expulsion for ragging. Ragging is a cognizable offence under the law as per the Supreme Court ruling and the same is implemented at the institute in all seriousness.


 
 
What is the scope for higher studies?

The GATE, CAT/MAT/XAT, and GRE Clubs of the institute take care of the students' interest for pursuing higher studies. The college even has a dedicated library for all competitive exams.


 
 
What are the job opportunities after joining the institute?

The strong Placement Cell of the institute makes sure that everyone should get a job after their graduation. Through Pre-Placement Training Programs, Summer Training Programs, Industry-Academia Interactions, Centers of Excellence, the institute instills in students the qualities to excel in life and work. What is the placement record of the institute?

The institute has shown an ever growing curve in campus recruitments since 1999. On an average the placement percentage has been 85%. The highest salary offered till date is Rs. 20 Lakhs per annum and the average salary is Rs. 4.5 Lakhs per annum. Campus recruitment is done in both software and core companies.


 
 
Apart from studies, what other facilities are provided to the students?

The institute has a rich sports infrastructure which includes a mini Olympic sized Swimming Pool, Cricket and Football Ground, Tennis Court, Volley Ball Court, Snooker, Badminton Court, and an Indoor Stadium. Apart from these, the facility for wall climbing, rope walking, kayaking and canoeing, and annual National Himalayan Trekking and Biking is also provided to the students. Medical and First Aid facilities are available round the clock in the campus.
