Workshop on soft computing and security

The six-day Workshop on Modern Trends in Soft Computing and Security Issues was organized successfully from September 23-28, 2013. The workshop was jointly organized by Centre for Soft Computing Research of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and National Institute of Science and Technology, Berhampur. Delegates from across the country outlined the technical issues involved in these frontier areas of computer science.

The Opening ceremony with the traditional 'lighting of the lamp' marked the inauguration of the workshop on September 23, 2013. Prof. Trinath Sahu, NIST, was present at the opening ceremony. The inaugural talk was delivered on "Introduction to Cryptology" by Mr. Sourav Sen Gupta who, later, also spoke about "Symmetric Key Cryptology (part 1)". The afternoon session comprised talks by Mr. Sumit Kumar Pandey ("Basic Mathematical Background for Cryptology") and Mr. Sourav Sen Gupta who delivered second part of the lecture on "Symmetric Key Cryptology".

A talk on "Encryption Schemes and Security Notions" by Mr. Sumit Kumar Pandey opened the session on the second day (September 24, 2013). After a tea break, Mr. Sourav Sen Gupta delivered a talk on "Introduction to Cryptanalysis", followed by a talk on "Signature Schemes and Security Notions" by Mr. Sumit Kumar Pandey, and another on "Key Pre-distribution Schemes in Network Security" by Dr. Pinaki Sarkar.

The third day of the workshop on September 25, 2013, had talks focused on "Soft Computing" by Padmashree Awardee Sankar Kumar Pal , "Basic Mathematics & Statistics (Parts 1 & 2)" and "Pattern Recognition (part 1)" by Mr. C.A. Murthy. Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director, NIST, welcomed the Guest of Honour Padmashree Awardee Sankar Kumar Pal who later inaugurated two labs.

On the fourth day (September 26, 2013), Mr. C.A. Murthy presented a talk on "Pattern Recognition (part 2), while Mr. Pradipta Maji spoke on "Rough-Fuzzy Sets (parts 1 & 2)". The day's sessions were concluded with a talk on "Bioinformatics" by Mr. Rajat Kumar De".

On September 27, 2013, the session was opened by Mr. Rajat Kumar De who gave a lecture in two parts on "Neural Networks", followed by a two-part talk by Mr. Malay Kumar Kundu on "Image Processing". The final day of the workshop had a talk on "Cognitive Vision" by Mr. Kuntal Ghosh.

During the course of the workshop, Padmashree Awardee Sankar Kumar Pal inaugurated an Image Processing Lab and a Network Security Lab in the NIST campus. The closing ceremony was held with equal aplomb and the 'Vote of Thanks' was proposed by Dr. Motahar Reza, Department of Mathematics, NIST, Berhampur. Prof. (Mrs.) Geetika Mudali, Placement Director, NIST, graced the occasion.
